PFF update on super Flood 2010, 16th August

Updates from District Thatta

? Lar Team Visited all Talukas of Thatta in order to make rapid assessment, help in evacuation and linking people with government agencies.

? Team coordinated departure of four speed boats from Keenjhar Lake to Kashmore

? Team met with PPP-MPA Ms Humera Alwani in Baghan Camp and discussed with her the overall situation. Both team and Humera ensured mutual coordination and support

? Team visited Soonda HP Bund. RBOD built in riverbed may cause seepage from the river, as water is eroding the bank of RBOD posing threat to Soonda and adjoining area. Embankment of Soonda HP is very weak and thin. Flood water can breach it and inundate hundreds of Villages.

? Authorities have not taken timely required efforts to strengthen the weak areas of Embankment and RBOD. RBOD seemed a Potential Hazard with high possibility of conversion into disaster destroying entire Thatta District

? On approach of a PFF worker, Team met with EDO Revenue to ask him break Zameendari Bund given at sight of Agheemani Kori that is obstructing the natural flow of the River Indus

? Team found Zameendari bunds given in river bed as major obstructions in flow of river and resulting in pressure on Embankment.

? Team visited Monarki again. It was found at high risk posing potential threat to thousands of families in Jati, Sujawal, Bathoro and Shah Bandar. River has begun to erode it.

? Thousands of People in camps and out of camps are in need of Mosquito nets, Latrines, Water cooler, water, Food Items, Hygiene Kits.

? Team found camps in all talukas short of adequate services in terms of hygiene, food and Medicines

Flood Update from Sukkur Region
? Upstream flow at Guddu is reported as higher as 10.5 Lac Cusec and that of Sukkur is 9.5 Lac Cusec
? The next flow of flood water in the river is being expected at Guddu on August 18, 2010 and its adverse effect is feared to remain over there by August 22, 2010
? 57 villages were assessed on Sunday. The assessment report will be shared on Monday evening. Some 20 individuals have been rescued during the assessment. Most of them were children, aged, weak and ill.
? ?PFF volunteers in Sukkur region have been grouped into three teams: Mr. Shahnawaz Soomro and Mr. Munawar are leading the distribution team. Mir Abid has the responsibility to remain in coordination with istrict government authorities, army, rangers and PFF members while Mr. Azeem Roonjho is busy in coordinating with local NGOs and UN Clusters

? Some 500 families at Guddu will receive NFIs on Monday evening
? Some cases of snake bites and gastro have been reported in the area. 8 cases of cholera have also been reported. The feared patients including children have been completely isolated and their test samples have been sent to Islamabad for laboratory diagnosis.
? Sukkur region has received 4 more speed boats today that are supposed to be used in rescue activities. Hence, the region has 46 boats including 6 speed boats in all for the rescue operation
