Uncertainty Prevails

Present flood situation in at least 11 districts has created uncertainty, as several people either have shifted their families to safe places or are looking ready to leave their abodes at any time. There is a panicky situation both right and left sides of the river. Only in Kashmore district 0.7 million people have been affected by the devastated flood, which has inundated more than 800 villages there. Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum has helped in evacuation of 25,000 people from Kashmore, as PFF operating 46 boats, including six speed boats for evacuation work in close collaboration with the district government.

Fears of further Displacement
People displaced from Jacobabad are shifting to other areas like, Karachi, Hyderabad and main roads. The situation along road sides, specially at Super Highway linking Karachi with rest of the country from Hyderabad, National Highway liking to Punjab and Khyber Pakhroonkhwa, is deplorable as hundreds of displaced families despite rains are staying there. These families do not have access to food and shelter. Government did not initiate any relief and rehabilitation work in any area. The experts say after the residents of twin city Hyderabad and Kotri are under threat to be displaced, there is only option to shift these people to Jamshoro mountainous areas, ordinarily.

PFF intervention in Karachi
Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) is keeping close eye over the changing situation of Karachi, mostly coastal areas and city suburbs where hundreds of families displaced by flood in upper Sindh province are pouring. PFF in collaboration with local philanthropists and civil society organizations are mobilizing relief goods to help the people in the difficult time. In the process, PFF has also approached towns administrations, mostly representing suburbs in Karachi to help the people.

Jacobabad / Shikarpur
PFF also activated Jacobabad team, which after shifting towards Shikarpur embankment has set up a relief camp in which 350 people presently are accommodated. For ration and cooked food they are approaching the district administration Shikarpur and other government offices operating in the area to feed the displaced people. However, there is no proper medical facility, as the lives of several people are at risk due to using contaminated water and unavailability of health and hygiene situation.

Matiari District
In Matiari and Benazirabad (Nawabshah) districts PFF offices have taken initiative to help the people in relief and rescue work instantly. At least three embankment points in Matiari district, have been declared weaken where the local community people are enaged with government machinery to strengthen the embankment to minimize the loss. PFF initially put ready 20 fishing boats.

Dadu/ Naushehro Feroz
The flood situation in Dadu and Naushehro Feroz has panicked the population residing close to the area where the government authorities had given cut, disrupting the traffic between Moro and Dadu Bridge which links upper parts of the province with lower districts like Naushehro Feroz Hyderabad and Matiari. Now after blocking the broad situation is worst and fears are there that the flood water may damage standing crops and inundate hundreds of villages in Naushehro Feroz and Dadu districts.

Indus Highway
After rising water level the main Indus Highway has come to the risk of flooding and may cause problem for the people using the way to reach safer places, like Karachi and Hyderabad from Jacobabad, Shahdadkot.

Districts at risk
After Kashmore, Jacobabad and parts of Sukkur and Ghotki it is feared that Shikarpur, Shahdadkot, Dadu, Jamshoro, Naushehro Feroz, Nawabshah, Matiari, Hyderabad, parts of Sanghar and Thatta are under threats. Presently water pressure on the left side towns Hala and neighbouring Bhanoth of Matiari district is rising. Hundreds of families have been shifted while others having cattle herds are waiting to hear any news and leave their abodes. There is complete uncertainty. However after newly emerging situation the threats of displacement in result of flood are rising.

Updates from Thatta
• Team completed its rapid assessment, developed the list of affected villages and villages at risk and identified their core needs.
• Team got from District authorities the list of emergency Numbers, Flood Contingency Plan, List of Relief Camps and Contact Numbers of Focal Persons,
• Team Shared Emergency numbers and contacts of respective EDOs revenues with all the people it met with the purpose of developing linkage of affected people with government and facilitating them to demand authorities for required services.
• Team held meeting with a philanthropist, shared with him the list of affected villages. He is planning to support more than 200 families in terms of FI. He has already provided FI support to 300 families with coordination of PFF.
• River from Rajoo Nizamani is eroding the bund posing threat to 720 HH of Rajoo Village.

Situation in bullets
• Dadu--Moro road cut down
• Flood has submerged all the villages at Katcha
• Rise by few inches may cut the path way (Indus highway) of Jamshoro Sehwan.
• Towns at the side of Indus Highway are also being inundated.
• People from flooded areas are shifting towards cities i.e. Hyderabad and Karachi
• People from the camps, have no facility, shifting to other areas.
• The flood water from Uper Sindh shall be diverted to Hamal Lake and then Manchar Lake through MNV and SP Bund Path.
• This water would affect more than 50,000 individuals exclusively.
• PFF Task forces are ready to perform their role at Manchar.
