PFF Flood Daily Report Aug27
The rumors of inundating Thatta Town, the district headquarter, were continued on Friday. The people have emptied Thatta vicinity and its major towns Sujawal, Daro, Mirpur Bathoro, Laiqpur and parts of Badin district after the flood water inundated Kot Alam and proceeding towards Belo Town. The right side breaching on Friday was another shock for the people of the Thatta district, which houses the historical Shahjahan Masjid and various other archeological sites in the vicinity. Wide area has come under the water after the breach to the protective SM bund from two sides. Goth Mohammed Khan Soomro, the native village of PPP MNA Abdul Wahid Soomro is among 12 villages, which have been inundated on Friday and the water is proceeding fast to the sea. The panic was witnessed everywhere, as the people were unable to guess where to go and what to do. Majority of people from Thatta has already migrated to other areas, after the district administration issued warning call on Thursday morning, asking people to evacuate immediately, saying that the flood water may inundate Thatta town within next 18 hours. But still the town vicinity is safe, but the pressure of water is prevails at the embankments.
PFF Response
Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) responded quickly by providing 12 boats, including seven speed boats and five fishing boats and six mini trucks to evacuate the people. Total 5500 people have been evacuated from different areas, which were under the water or facing threats to be inundated. PFF volunteers were scattered there, helping the people, bringing their belongings to safer places.
High Tides
High tides in the sea do not receive the River Water, which are said to be continued for the next two days. The high tides might be the main cause of rising water pressure at the weaken embankments in Thatta district.
Situation at Makli
The situation of camps at Makli, the only safe place attracted the wide number of affected people, was witnessed miserable as there was no food for the people, who were staying in the open. There were more than one lac people migrated from different flood affected areas and still pouring into there. They were crying for ration. The people brought something while leaving their abodes they have cooked and needing more. The lack of food, ration and shelter has exposed these people to the weather effects. In this situation it was obvious that due to unavailability of food, safe water and health facilities the major life threat was for women and children, living in the miserable conditions.
Shahdadkot--Kambar
After breaching developed from Golo Wah linked to MNV Drain panicked the residents of Shahdadkot town and its adjoining areas, who were already preparing to maintain the embankment to stop the flood water flowing from the Torhi Bund breaching. Majority of the residents had already evacuated the area in fear and the water was proceeding towards there from two sides. Looking the situation worst the residents started to build another embankment to save the town from the threatened side. Kambar Town is also under threats, after breaching in MNV drain, which is carrying water from Hamal Lake and streaming to the Manchhar Lake. At least 10 villages of Ghaibi Dero Union Council of Kambar have come under the water and the town is still safe, but fears have compelled a large number of the families to shift to safer places.
PFF Response in Shahdadkot and Kambar
PFF already initiated the rescue and relief work by using speed boats with bringing a large number of community volunteers to help the people. On Friday the PFF volunteers evacuated 14 families through boats from Kambar district villages. While the PFF boats rescued three more families from Shahdadkot neighbourhood, which were pointed out by the area influential. PFF also provided two boats to the humanitarian organizations, which wanted to supply life saving medicines to the people living in camps, located at Saifullah Canal embankment.
PFF supplied Food
PFF team was approached by Sindh Minister for Food Sardar Nadir Magsi to help distributing food and ration among the people living in far off villages. Obviously they were safe at embankments but needing help. The minister appreciated the work of PFF team in the area and sought further help for the people in his constituency. The minister himself was keen to help the people in this difficult time.
Situation at Manchhar Lake
Situation at Manchhar Lake was normal, as its water level reached 11.5ft on Friday. The lake is receiving water from all the three natural sources, the Indus River, Nai Gaj and MNV drain. It was feared that in case of more torrential rains may create threats for the people living near the lake neighborhoods. Otherwise, there were no visible threats to the people. PFF activists were mobilizing the community to maintain the Lake bunds to avoid any untoward incident in case of receiving more water.
