Badin rainfall causes displacement
August 11, 2011
Heavy rains stated on August 10, 2011 have caused displacement in coastal areas of Badin and Thatta district. Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) put its Emergency Response Unit active on Thursday to collect information regarding losses if any in terms of house collapse. Initial reports received from Union Council (UC) Bhugra Memon, Badin Ditrict, which reveals that the rain water has inundated several villages. PFF rescue team sent vehicles to evacuate residents from eight villages including Molvi Haji Ahmed Malah, Yusuf Malah, Haji Adam Malah, KhamoMalah, YousufBhati, PandhiMalah, Ghazi Khan Lund, Haji Urs Lund and others. Similar reports are coming from Taluka Shah Bunder’sChoharJamali, area where around 20 villages have come under water.
The residents are being shifted to safer places in Badin city and other neighbouring localities, especially to government schools. PFF volunteers are actively supporting the affected people, collecting information. These people called PFF teams in Badin for their rescue and PFF responded them quickly to extend helping hand on emergency basis. The PFF Emergency Unit has asked the people to call them for help if any need for their rescue.
The rain is pouring since the last 46 hours till 5pm on Thursday. There is no electricity. Water supply system has been collapsed completely and partially. There is food shortage in these areas, because they do not have safe place where these communities may cook food for their children. They are leaving their abodes on emergency basis, fearing the rain may cause devastation if continues. The people have witnessed the same disastrous rain in year 2003 when the heavy downpours continued for 32 hours and caused huge loss, in which several people were killed.
The communities mostly living close to the controversial Left Bank Outfall Drainage (LBOD) are most vulnerable as the drainage when receives rain water from different areas causes breaches from different points, flooding wide area. the fearing people are shifting their families to safer places.
