Rehabilitation of flood and cyclone affected communities: AEIC Project

In the costal areas of Pakistan, Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum has been always actively involved with fishers' communities for their mobilization, organization and sustainable livelihoods. From the intensive interaction with the community and looking into the overall state of infrastructure, PFF has realized that these communities are prone to disasters appearing from the sea. For several times, the Arabian Sea has devastated the coastal belt and occasioned uncountable loss to the fishers of Badin and Thatta districts. Once it had hit in 2007 in the shape of cyclone, which took away too much from the fishers. PFF took initiatives to reduce the risk of disasters and it had succeeded over reducing the loss of lives. However, the cyclone in 2007 had destroyed too much economically and socially. After the cyclone, PFF worked on the relief activities in the coastal belt in Badin and Thatta districts.

Besides it launched programme to rehabilitate them. This programme is supported by ActionAid under its AECI project. The rehabilitation aimed to assist the most marginalized communities belonging to the weaker sections of landless farmers, fishermen and women as they can immediately restore to the normal course of life. The rehabilitation activities include provision of shelter material to fully destroyed houses of 300 families, partially destroyed houses of 1,000 families, provision of boats and fishing gears to 270 families and awareness raising sessions on the disaster management and preparedness to 300 community members.
