Good Governance for dealing with water crisis in the Indus Delta

In June 2006, PFF and Alternatives Canada took initiative to materialize theme of Good Governance for dealing with water crisis in the Indus Delta. Both organizations are worried over the slow death of the Indus delta- seventh largest delta of the world. They worry because delta is dying which is a huge natural asset and source of livelihoods of millions of fishers, peasants as well as sanctuary of birds and animals.

Just and Sustainable Livelihoods

In September 2008, Oxfam Novib and PFF joined hand together to initiate a project Just and Sustainable Livelihoods. The project is launched in eight districts which are Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Jamshoro, Sanghar, Kashmore, Qambar and Shahdadkot in Sindh and Gawadar in Balochistan. It aims to mobilize and organize fisherfolk communities in the respective districts for the attainment of just and sustainable livelihoods.

Development Area (DA) 14

For making the poverty history in the fisher communities, PFF and ActionAid got together in 2003. In this regard, six core key areas, i.e. education, health, food rights, good governance, women rights and peace and human security were selected to be addressed. The work on these core areas was done through the right based approach by involving the local people and lobbying with stakeholders. In the whole process, the major aim was to bring over the people into PFF’s struggle for advancing social justice the fishers.

Rehabilitation of flood and cyclone affected communities: AEIC Project

In the costal areas of Pakistan, Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum has been always actively involved with fishers' communities for their mobilization, organization and sustainable livelihoods. From the intensive interaction with the community and looking into the overall state of infrastructure, PFF has realized that these communities are prone to disasters appearing from the sea. For several times, the Arabian Sea has devastated the coastal belt and occasioned uncountable loss to the fishers of Badin and Thatta districts.

Sustainable Livelihoods Initiative in Disaster Prone Areas of Karachi

Oxfam GB is supporting PFF for the project ‘sustainable livelihoods initiatives in disaster prone areas of Karachi’. The project has been working to reduce poverty and gender imbalance, improve the livelihood of disaster affected communities, particularly women by creating critical links between relief, rehabilitation and sustainable development. The project is focusing on villages in Gabo Pat union council of Karachi.

Community Based Disaster Risk Management and Livelihood Program

The title of the project is “Community Based Disaster Risk Management and Livelihood Program in Drought, Flood and Cyclone prone Areas of Pakistan” which had started in the last June 2008 in Thatta district. The project is funded by Oxfam GB and European Commission with aiming to attain following main and specific objectives:
-Reduce the impacts of the future disasters (cyclones, floods) by enhancing capacities and capabilities of the fisher communities who will respond to the disasters effectively;

Gift Unwrapped

In the early 2007, PFF and Oxfam GB has also identified coastal belt of Thatta as disaster prone area. For that Gift Unwrapped project was initiated in August 2007 and ended in April 2008. The project was launched in 30 villages of 2 union councils Kothi and Kar Malik of Jati Taluka- Thatta.

Community Empowerment Project

In 2006, PFF in support with NED began its project to improve the responsiveness and accountability of local government, corporations, and other powerful interests on a wide array of issues impacting the livelihoods of fisherfolks. In this regard, PFF has been organizing district and national level events to raise awareness of fisherfolk issues. PFF also aim to strengthen the organizational and management capacity of local communities in coastal Sindh and to empower them work to protect their livelihoods and rights.

‘Livelihood Up gradation through Conservation of Biodiversity for Coastal Communities of District Badin’

The United Nations Office for Project Service (UNOPS) under the Global Environmental Facility/Small Grants Programme is funding for a project ‘Livelihood Up gradation through Conservation of Biodiversity for Coastal Communities of District Badin’.
