World Fisheries Day observed
Fishermen said there were many threats to their livelihood and if this situation continued it would affect 3 million fishermen living along the 1050-kilometre Pakistan coastline stretching through Balochistan and Sindh.
In their declaration issued on the occasion of the World Fisheries Day, organised by Pakistan Fisherfolk's Forum (PFF)at Moriro Community Centre in Ibrahim Hyderi on Wednesday, they said fishermen's families, depending on fishing had been under severe economic strains due to the government's wrong policies.
The theme of the day was, “People's Sovereignty Over Natural Resources”, in which a large number of fishermen and fisherwomen, representing different coastal localities and inland water bodies participated.
The Chairman, PFF, Mohammed Ali Shah, in his welcome address appreciated the participation of fishermen, trade union and right activists, and representatives of civil society organisations.
He said fishermen being traditional custodians of these water bodies had the right to fishing, but that they were being denied their basic right.
Earlier, Karamat Hussain of PILER, Iqbal Hyder of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), Aly Ercelawn, Khadim Hussain of Action Aid, Prof Mohammad Nauman, Tahira Ali, and M Ali Shah expressed solidarity with the struggle of fisherfolk through a show of hands.
PFF theatre group staged dramas and performed tableaus to highlight their issues and oppose mega-water projects.
The speakers said despite provincial government's decision of introducing license system over sweet water bodies, some influentials were still occupying them, depriving bona fide fishermen of their right to fishing.
They said after passage of 60 years, the government has introduced Fishing Policy, which had failed to guarantee local fishermen protection of their basic rights.
They expressed concern over the New Fisheries Policy, introduced by the government and said fishermen had been denied their rights in the policy and local contractors and investors had been supported, which should be condemned. -JK
